Kuwait is preparing to tender the consultancy and main contracts for the next two phases of the state’s multibillion-dollar airport redevelopment programme following the approval by the Finance Ministry of a KD250m ($827m) budget.

These phases, phase 2 and phase 3, entail the construction of a central structure that will link the airport’s existing east runway with the west runway as well as the construction of car parking facilities and other related buildings.

According to a local media report,  Kuwait's Public Works  Ministry  has requested the Central Agency for Public Tenders "to accelerate the procedures related to the consultation agreement for the design of phase three."

MEED earlier reported that Kuwait’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation expects to issue the tender for the consultancy package for the central runway at Kuwait International airport before the end of 2017, with an award expected in early 2018.

MEED understands the Public Works Ministry also plans to tender the contract for the construction of the car parking facilities in October 2018.

Construction work on the $4.3bn Terminal 2 and the $174m temporary passenger terminal at Kuwait International airport is under way.

Terminal 2 is expected to be completed between 2020 and 2022, while the temporary passenger terminal is expected to be completed next year.

In March, DGCA awarded a joint venture of China’s Avic International Holding Corporation and the local Al-Dar (HOT) Engineering & Construction with the KWD149.8m ($492m) contract for the construction of a new code 4F west runway, the extension of the existing east runway, a new air traffic control tower, parallel taxiways, access roads and other related facilities.
