Kuwait tenders new runway

03 January 2016

Submission deadline is 7 February

Kuwait’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) is inviting firms to bid for the design and construction of a new airport runway at the Kuwait International airport (KIA).

The submission of technical and financial offers is to close on 7 February.

In addition to the construction of a new runway, the tender also calls for the upgrade and widening of the airport’s existing eastern runway.

The runway projects comprise a key segment of package 3, phase 1 of KIA’s expansion programme. Other segments of the package include taxiways, an air traffic control system, access roads and utilities, which are understood to be excluded in this specific tender.

Multiple airport projects in Kuwait are currently in various stages of procurement. The largest of these, the $4.3bn Terminal 2, is awaiting final approval following the selection of a preferred bidder in August.

A review of the award process for Terminal 2 is now likely, resulting in further delays, due to allegations of financial and administrative irregularities.

Other projects that are in the bidding stage include the passenger support terminal building, where a joint venture of Turkey’s Cengiz Insaat Sanayi Ve Ticareta and local First Kuwaiti General Trading & Contracting (FKTC) has submitted a low bid of KD52.8m ($174m) and an aircraft parking and corridors package.
