Kuwait’s new cabinet sworn in

13 December 2012

No major changes to cabinet members following 1 December election

Kuwait’s new cabinet has been sworn in following the parliamentary elections held on 1 December.

There are few changes to the new cabinet line-up, a move set to anger opposition factions that had been calling for government reform.

The former finance minister Mustafa Al-Shimali was reinstated despite resigning seven months ago, following pressure from opposition groups and allegations of alleged corruption.

Earlier in December, Kuwait’s Emir Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad al-Jaber al-Sabah issued a decree reappointing Prime Minister, Sheikh Jaber al-Mubarak al-Sabah.

Sheikh Jaber al-Sabah was previously sworn in as Kuwait’s seventh prime minister, just a year ago, replacing Sheikh Nasser al-Mohammed al-Sabah, the emir’s nephew, who resigned following allegations of corruption.

Many opposition groups boycotted the 1 December elections, in protest at the Emir’s decision to change the voting law.

Anti-government sentiment led to weeks of street protests in the country ahead of the elections.
