Laing sinks into Atlantis

27 January 2006
The local/UK Al-Naboodah Laing O'Rourkehas started work on an estimated $77 million concrete structure package at the $1,500 million Atlantis resort located on the crescent of Palm Jumeirah. The package includes all structures for the hotel and convention centre and associated cranage.
Al-Naboodah Laing O'Rourke is also providing construction management services on Atlantis. The complex nature of the project meant that a traditional lump-sum contract or design and build agreement was not feasible given the large amount of specialist subcontracts that would be required. Instead, Al-Naboodah Laing O'Rourke will manage the subcontracts, which will be issued as separate packages by the client.

Several packages are currently out to bid. Bids are due to be submitted by early February for: dewatering; earthworks; structural steel, which includes the convention centre roof and sky bridge between the hotel and convention centre; mechanical electrical and plumbing works; saltwater intake works; and elevator packages. Packages to be issued for bid in February include precast works, water slides and an aluminium and glazing tender.

The local joint venture (JV) of Emtechand APCCis working on the piling package. Canada's NORR Group Consultants Internationalis the design, structural, mechanical and electrical consultant; the UK's K Home Internationalis providing project management services. A JV of Bahamas-based Kerzner Internationaland the local Istithmaris the client (MEED 11:11:05).
