Larsen & Toubro bids low for Qatar wastewater contract

11 March 2010

Ashghal project will add 80,000 cubic metres a day capacity to Doha South plant

A joint venture of India’s Larsen & Toubro, Oman’s Galfar and the US’ ITT is the lowest bidder for the expansion of the 112,000-cubic-metre-a-day (cm/d) Doha South wastewater treatment plant in Qatar.

Qatar’s Public Works Authority (Ashghal) received revised bids from three groups last month, which came from the Larsen & Toubro group; Athens-based Consolidated Contractors Company (CCC) with France’s Veolia; and Singapore’s Keppel Seghers and the local HBK Contracting.

Each of the competing teams was asked to submit revised bids by 16 February. The client is due to formally award the project by the end of March and work is scheduled to begin in May (MEED 26:2:10).

The project will add 80,000 cm/d to the existing 112,000 cm/d capacity of the plant.

Ashghal’s long-term plan is to relocate the Doha South plant to Mesaieed, about 35km south of the capital. However, industry sources say this is unlikely to happen for another 15 years.

Under the relocation plan, the Doha South plant would be converted into a pumping station. Sewage would still be collected at the site, but from there it would be pumped southwest to Abu Nakhla before being transferred to Mesaieed for treatment.
