The local Tourism & Development Investment Company (TDIC) is in talks with the local/Australian Gulf Leighton to build a road tunnel connecting Abu Dhabi island with Hudayriat island.
In December last year, TDIC entered into a partnering agreement with Gulf Leighton to build projects in Abu Dhabi, including works on Saadiyat island.
The project was originally planned as a bridge, but these plans were scrapped in the middle of 2007.
According to the Plan Abu Dhabi 2030 Urban Structure Framework, the eastern section of Hudayriat island will have low-rise residential developments and open spaces, while the western section of the island closer to Abu Dhabi cornice has been reserved for the government.
The UK’s Mott MacDonald is the consultant for the tunnel (MEED 23:3:07).
