The Qatar Foundation for Education, Science & Community Development has awarded Australia's Gulf Leighton a $407 million contract for the construction of the Al-Shaqab equestrian academy.

The new academy will be built at Education City on the outskirts of Doha. The award represents Leighton's first in the local market.

Covering an area of about 2.7 million square metres, the project involves the construction of an equine management facility that will include: a breeding facility, an equine hospital, an Olympic-standard indoor arena with adjoining outdoor arena, clubhouse and stables, staff accommodation, entertainment facilities, a museum, and all associated infrastructure works. Work will begin by early July and completion is scheduled for December 2008.

The architect is Hong Kong-based Leigh & Orange. The project manager is the local office of KEO International Consultants.
