Libya appoints oil corporation chief

01 October 2009

Announcement follows departure of Shokri Ghanem

Libya’s National Oil Corporation (NOC) has appointed Ali Seghir Mohammed Saleh as its new head after Shokri Ghanem departed in early September.

Saleh, the former director-general of NOC, will take up the position as secretary general of the group while also retaining his old post as director general, according to a statement on the NOC website.

Mohammed Saleh was predicted to replace Ghanem after representing Libya at an Opec production meeting on 9 September.

Azzam al-Messallati, a member of NOC’s administrative board, had been acting as the head of NOC since early September. He is expected to return to his role.

An international oil company source says Ghanem’s resignation was accepted by Prime Minister Baghdadi al-Mahmudi in mid-September although NOC has not made an official statement.
