State-owned telecoms company will link Tobruk and Emasaed
Huawei Marine Networks has won a contract to install a submarine cable connecting the Libyan cities of Tobruk and Emasaed, along the country’s northeast coast.
The company expects to complete the 177-kilometre-long cable by mid-2010.
Huawei Marine Networks is a joint venture of China’s Huawei Technologies and UK-based submarine cable provider Global Marine Systems.
The client is state-owned telecoms company Libyan Post Telecommunications & Information Technology Company (LPTIC).
In November 2009, France’s Alcatel-Lucent won a contract from LPTIC to install optical fibres in eastern Libya. That deal will add 2,800km of fibre optics to the 4,400km network that Alcatel-Lucent has already installed.
