Samir Salem Kamal freed after being held for two weeks

Libyan Opec official Samir Salem Kamal has been released by his captors, after being held for two weeks.

Kamal is the planning director of Libya’s National Oil Company (NOC) and a representative to oil producers’ group Opec.

On 1 February, Kamal’s family received a call notifying them that he had been released and was on a motorway in Tripoli, according to local media.

“He is well considering the situation; in good health, but a bit shaken up,” the family said in a statement.

Kamal was blindfolded and never saw his attackers, according to his son.

No one has claimed responsibility for the kidnapping.

Kamal has been one of Libya’s representatives to Opec for two years. An uneasy ceasefire has been agreed between the country’s two warring governments.

The internationally backed, democratically elected government is currently based in the small eastern city of Tobruk, while an Islamist government holds sway in Tripoli.

The two governments have been using affiliated militias and other armed groups to fight over territory and control of Libya’s oil revenues.

On 20 January, the UN called on both sides in the struggle to maintain the ceasefire amid reports of clashes west of Tripoli and near the oil port of El-Sider.
