The UK’s Lloyd’s Register Energy has been awarded a contract to provide construction oversight and technical services by the UAE’s Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR).

Lloyd’s Register, in partnership with the US’ Lightbridge Corporation, will provide assistance to FANR’s internal inspection team on numerous activities including project management, construction inspection and oversight services, design verification and vendor inspection for Abu Dhabi’s nuclear project at Baraka in the Western Region.

FANR was established in 2009 as the independent nuclear energy industry regulator.

As a result of the rapidly growing demand for electricity, Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (Enec) is developing a 5.6GW plant at Baraka. The plant will consist of four reactors, which will each produce 1.4GW when commissioned.

The first reactor is due to come online in 2017, with one additional reactor coming online every year until 2020. By the beginning of 2014, construction work on Baraka units 1 and 2 were 35 per cent complete. In February, Enec received approval for additional civil construction works on units 3 and 4.
