07 May 2004
A joint venture of the local AA Nassand South Africa's Murray & Roberts Contractors (Middle East) has received a letter of intent for the main construction contract on the Sheraton Garden City project. Work on site is scheduled to start on 15 May.

The estimated BD 30 million ($79 million) contract calls for construction of two 50-storey towers surrounded by landscaped gardens on the seafront side of the existing Sheraton complex in Manama. Two other groups were called for final technical meetings in late April, comprising: the local Cebarco, with Australia's Multiplex;and Cyprus-based GP Zachariades (GPZ - Overseas), with France's Bouygues. The UK's WS Atkinsis the project manager (MEED 26:4:04).

The development joins an increasing number of tourism projects under way in the kingdom. In height, the Garden City towers will rival those under construction at the nearby Bahrain Financial Harbour development.
