Major hospitals planned in Kuwait

Five new hospitals, providing over 1,300 new beds, are planned to be built in Kuwait by both the government and the private sector.

The largest of the proposed schemes is an 800-bed facility planned to be built at South Surra. Four international companies applied for prequalification by mid-July for the position of project manager. They are Hill Internationaland Turner International, bothof the US, and Mace Internationaland Bovis, both of the UK. The client is the Planning Ministry, acting on behalf of the Health Ministry.

Next in line is a 200-bed expansion of the existing Kuwait Oil Company hospital at Ahmadi. A team of the US' Langdon Wilsonand the local Gulf Consult is the consultant on the estimated $115 million project. A tender is due to be issued soon to contractors (MEED 28:6:02).

The local National Co-operative Projects Committee is planning the construction of a 150-bed cardiac care hospital at Shuwaikh.

Estimated to be worth $36 million, the project calls for the construction of an eight-storey building, a car park, landscaping and electrical and plumbing works. Bids are due to be returned by 25 October, following an extension to the deadline. The consultant is Langdon Wilson with the local Kuwait Technical Office. The new hospital will be managed by the Health Ministry (MEED 1:8:03).

Two more hospitals are planned - a 100-bed facility at Jabriya and the 80-100-bed Al-Maidan paediatrics and maternity hospital. The consultant for both schemes is a team of Gulf Consult with the US' NBBJ Partnership. Design work is complete for both new hospitals.
