Mapna heads for 3,000-MW project

11 July 2003
A group headed by the local Iran Power Plants Project Management Company (Mapna)has been nominated as the preferred bidder for the contract to install 3,100 MW at four power plants across the country. The contract, expected to be finalised soon, will be worth about $750 million. However, project sources say there is a possibility that a portion of the work will go to the other bidder, led by the local Kayson Group (MEED 6:6:03).

The Mapna group also includes Italy's Ansaldo Energia and Germany's Siemens. The Kayson bidding group includes the local Namvaran Industry Network Developers, France's Alstomand Mitsubishi Heavy Industriesand Marubeni Corporation, both of Japan.

The contract will call for the installation of 1,000 MW at the Rey power plant south of Tehran, 700 MW in the south of Fars province, 700 MW at Qain in southern Khorasan province and 700 MW at Urumiya in west Azerbaijan province. The Rey upgrade will comprise four 250-MW gas turbines, which have not been used in Iran before. The other plants will employ 160-MW gas turbines. The first units are scheduled for commissioning 18 months after the contract is signed.

The project is the first package in a programme to install 12,000 MW at different power stations over the coming years. The project sponsor, Iran Power Development Company (IPDC), is a direct subsidiary of Tavanir, the Energy Ministry power management and strategy company.
