Four projects to evaluate different technologies
Abu Dhabi sustainable developer Masdar will begin evaluating various techniques for desalination using renewable energy at four pilot sustainable desalination projects from early 2015.
After firms showed keen interest in the tender in 2013, the pilot plants were awarded to Spains Abengoa, Frances Degremont and Veolia, and US start-up Trevsi Systems.
The facilities are already under construction and will be completed in early 2015. The evaluation will take place over the course of 18 months and will be completed in late 2016.
Masdar will then present results to the government and advise it on selecting technology for utility-scale renewable desalination plants.
The Abu Dhabi governments future vision is to power desalination through renewables, so they requested that we explore the options, said Alexander Ritschel, senior manager for special projects at Masdar, speaking at MEEDs Abu Dhabi Energy, Industry and Infrastructure Conference in Abu Dhabi on 9 December.
We will evaluate the different technologies on energy efficiency, quality, reliability, maintenance and operation requirements, and their suitability to Abu Dhabi.
Abu Dhabis existing desalination capacity was built several decades ago and prioritised reliability and water quality over energy efficiency. Although the capacity is robust, of high quality and reliable, technological advances mean significant improvements can be made in energy consumption.
