Gulf firms lead the way
The three food companies listed in the Top 100 are all from the Gulf, with two Saudi companies and one Kuwaiti business. The Saudi firms both managed to improve their standing from last year. The larger of them, Almarai Company, started out in 1977 as a dairy business, but has since expanded into other areas such as poultry, breads and fruit juices.
From 32nd place in 2012 it rose to 30th place this year. The other Saudi company, Savola Group, rose by six places to 39th. Its main food offerings include edible oils, sugar and pasta. The final food company in the Top 100, Americana Group (Kuwait Food Company), is a new entrant to the list.
It operates in 13 countries across the region, running both internationally branded restaurant chains such as KFC, Pizza Hut and TGI Friday’s as well as six of its own brands including Chicken Tikka, Fish Market and Grand Cafe. The company also has a number of consumer food brands in its portfolio.
