Mesaieed LAB project goes for bid

The engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) package has been issued for bid by Qatar Petroleum (QP)on the Mesaieed linear alkyl benzene (LAB) project. Prequalified companies have been given until 12 October to submit unpriced technical bids and 7 December for priced commercial bids. The estimated $240 million project calls for the construction of a 80,000-tonne-a-year (t/y) normal paraffin (n-paraffin) plant and a 100,000-t/y LAB unit within the battery limits of the Mesaieed refinery (MEED 23:5:03).

The prequalifiers for the EPC package are understood to include LG Engineering & Constructionand Samsung Engineering Corporation, both of South Korea, Japan's Chiyoda Corporation, Paris-based Technip-Coflexipand US-based Kellogg Brown & Root.

The complex, due to be commissioned in late 2005, will use kerosine feedstock from the neighbouring refinery. The UK office of US-based Foster Wheeleris the front-end engineering and design (FEED) contractor and project management consultant; the US' UOPis the technology licensor (MEED 10:1:03).
