Microsoft announces job cuts

Microsoft has announced that it will shed 5,000 jobs over the coming 18 months. The company reported net profits of $4.17bn for the three months to 31 December, down 11% on the same period in 2007. The firm also said that it was no longer able to give a profit outlooks for the fiscal year amid current volatile market conditions.
