Militants attack security officer's car

30 December 2003
Suspected Islamist militants attacked a car belonging to a senior officer in the Saudi Arabian security forces on 29 December. No-one was injured in the incident. The attack, in which an explosive devise was thrown at the car, happened shortly after the officer parked outside his home in the Al-Salam district of Riyadh. Police said that the car was destroyed in the attack and that security officials were combing the area for suspects. An investigation has been launched, said civil defence chief Saad bin Abdullah al-Tuijri. 'It was a small blast and the car was not stuffed with explosives but we are investigating the incident,' a Saudi interior ministry official told Reuters.

The UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) issued a security warning for Saudi Arabia on 28 December. 'Following terrorist attacks in Riyadh in May and November, we continue to believe terrorists are planning further attacks in Saudi Arabia, and that these could be in the final stages of preparation,' an official FCO statement said.
