Japan's Mitsubishi Electric Corporation and Germany's Siemens are low bidders for two contracts, totalling more than KD 41 million ($141 million), to build and extend three 300-kV substations in the state. The client, the Energy Ministry, is expected to make an award by the end of the third quarter (MEED 24:3:06).

Mitsubishi is low bidder at KD 27 million ($93 million) for the 24-month contract to supply and install two 300/132-kV substations at Kaifan W and Jahra X. South Korea's Hyundai Engineering & Construction Company is ranked second on price at KD 31 million ($107 million).

For the second, a 12-month contract covering the extension of the existing 300-kV Fintas W substation and the supply and installation of electrical cables, Siemens is the lowest bidder at KD 14.5 million ($50 million). Hyundai is again ranked second at KD 15.8 million ($55 million).

The two contracts are the latest in a number of local substation projects aimed at reinforcing and expanding the transmission and distribution sectors. An award is pending for the contract to supply and install eight 132-kV substations in various locations around the state, for which Siemens is low bidder at KD 20.8 million ($71.7 million MEED 10:3:06).

Bid evaluation is also ongoing at a number of other Energy Ministry substation projects including the Qurain W and Siddiq W 300/132/11-kV substations, for which Mitsubishi and Europe's ABB are the respective low bidders (MEED 16:12:05).
