Biography:Modar al-Mekdad has more than 18 years’ experience in senior management in the region’s aluminium industry.

Before becoming general manager in 2004, he was engineering manager at the firm for five years. Al-Mekdad is playing a key role in developing the firm’s joint venture agreement with Adbic for the construction of a $122m, 50,000-t/y facility at the metals park in Abu Dhabi. He was instrumental in the firm’s recent acquisition of the UK-based aluminium car parts manufacturer Sport Carrier.

He started his career with National Aluminum in Damascus in 1989 as technical manager. Al-Mekdad is a graduate of Damascus University and has a master’s degree in mechanical engineering from Technical University in Holland.

He is the founding chairman of Qualicoat Middle East, an aluminium quality organisation and is also a member of the UAE Society of Engineers.
