A senior executive directing investments into the telecoms sector in North Africa
Mohammad Hassan Omran
Company: Emirates Telecommunications Company (Etisalat)
Position: Chairman
Biography: Mohammed Hassan Omran has been an employee at UAE-based Etisalat for more than 30 years. Omran joined Etisalat in 1977, only a year after the company was set up, after completing an engineering degree at Egypt’s Cairo University.
His first senior management role came in 1982, when he was appointed area manager of Ras al-Khaimah. Two years later, Omran was promoted deputy general manager. He was promoted to his current position in 2004.
Since becoming chairman, Omran has overseen Etisalat’s transformation from modest local provider to one of the largest telecoms companies in the world. In 2006, the UAE’s Etisalat won the third mobile operating licence in Egypt, beating rival bids from Kuwait’s Zain and South Africa’s MTN.
Etisalat now has an estimated 12-15 per cent share of the Egypt mobile phone market.
