More than 100 Iraqis detained

09 October 2003
More than 100 Iraqis were arrested in the western town of Al-Qaim, announced the US-led coalition on 8 October. US military sources said that the men had been detained in a swoop on the town carried out on 5 October, during which coalition troops cordoned off sections of the town and searched about 30 houses. Coalition sources said that a former senior official in Saddam Hussein's Republican Guard is among those arrested.

The news of the arrests came soon after a publication of a report by the Iraqi Lawyers League report, which stated that there are in excess of 5,000 Iraqis being held by US forces. The Iraqi Lawyers League, a newly established body, is mounting a human rights campaign on behalf of the detainees and their families'.
