More time for Heliopolis Sheraton bidders

The local/Kuwaiti Gulf Egypt for Hotels & Tourismhas extended the bid deadline for the contract to expand the Sheraton Heliopolis Hotel in Cairo by three weeks to 29 March. At least seven groups of international contractors are prequalified for the $50 million-55 million contract, which will involve construction of a new wing on the existing site (MEED 10:1:02).

The prequalified companies are understood to include Besixof Belgium, Athens-based Consolidated Contractors International Company (CCC), Cyprus-based Joannou & Paraskevaides (J&P- Overseas), Bouyguesof France, Samsung Corpor- ationof South Korea, Lebanon's Arabian Con- struction Company, which is planning to bid with Interbetonof the Netherlands, and France's SAE International, which refurbished the existing 588-room hotel in the mid-1990s.

Scheduled for completion in 2004, the new building will have a built-up area of 51,000 square metres and contain an additional 285 rooms. Designed by the UK office of Wimberly Allison Tong& Goo, the rooms will be arranged over six storeys around a glazed atrium with gardens, water features, restaurants, bars and a healthclub. Other facilities will include a new ballroom, conference halls and parking for 200 cars. Toronto-based Yollesis structural engineer for the project.
