Morocco to invest $30bn in renewable energy by 2030

16 January 2018
Projects will form central part of 52 per cent clean energy target

Morocco is planning to invest $30bn in renewable energy projects by 2030, according to the kingdom’s energy minister, speaking at the World Future Energy Summit (WFES) in Abu Dhabi on 16 January 2018.

Aziz Rabbah, Morocco’s Minister of Energy, Mines, Water & Sustainable Development, told the WFES conference that the kingdom was planning to invest $40bn in energy by 2030, of which 75 per cent would be in renewable energy.

The renewable energy investment will be in solar, wind and hydroelectric projects. The projects will form part of the kingdom’s target for renewable energy to contribute to 52 per cent of total power generation by 2030.

Rabbah said that investment in renewable projects forms the first pillar of Morocco’s plans for a green economy, with the second pillar set to involve increasing energy efficiency through rationalising consumption. The minister said the kingdom is targeting to reduce electricity consumption by 20 per cent by 2030.
