Morocco restores diplomatic relations with Spain

08 January 2008
Morocco has restored full diplomatic relations with Madrid following the resolution of a dispute over the visit of Spain's King Juan Carlos to two Spanish enclaves in North Africa.

Rabat’s ambassador to Madrid was reinstated on 7 January, having been withdrawn in November in reaction to King Carlos's visit to Ceuta and Melilla, over which Rabat claims sovereignty.

The restoration of relations follows the visit to Morocco of Spain’s Foreign Minister Miguel Angel Mortinos on 3 January.

“Following the visit...it was decided that Morocco’s ambassador should return to his work immediately,” says the Moroccan Foreign Ministry.
