Motorola awards GSM subcontracts

A Japanese joint venture of NEC Corporationand Sumitomo Corporationhas been awarded a $650,000 contract to supply equipment to the US' Motorolafor one of three mobile networks being built in Iraq.

Motorola in late October was awarded a $40 million contract by Egypt's Orascom Telecomto install GSM base stations and transmission networks for the central region, where the Egyptian-led consortium Orascom Telecom Iraq Corporation(Iraqna)holds a two-year turnkey contract to operate a regional network. Orascom's other major equipment supplier in Iraq will be France's Alcatel. The consortium plans to invest $100 million in rolling out the new network and aims to have 1 million subscribers within two years (MEED 31:10:03).
