Motorola wins Zain mobile network deal

02 March 2008
Kuwait’s Zain has awarded a $335m contract to the US’ Motorola to deploy and manage its mobile communications network in Saudi Arabia.

The contract covers the design, deployment and management of a second and third generation mobile communications network in the kingdom.

Zain, formerly known as MTC, is expected to launch its services in Saudi Arabia within the next four months, after agreeing to buy the third mobile operating licence issued by Riyadh last July.

Zain bid $6.1bn for the licence (MEED 8:6:07).

In February this year, Zain in Saudi Arabia launched an initial public offering (IPO) worth $1.68bn.

Motorola has provided services to Zain for the past 14 years.
