23 October 2009

Contract covers construction of the five-star Rosewood Hotel and amenities

Abu Dhabi-based developer Mubadala Real Estate & Hospitality received commercial bids on 13 October for its contract to build the Rosewood Abu Dhabi Hotel on Sowwah Island.

The bidders are the UAE’s Alec, the UAE/UK Al-Futtaim Carillion, the joint venture of the UAE’s Al-Habtoor Engineering Enterprises and South Africa’s Murray & Roberts Contractors (Middle East), the local/Lebanese Arabian Construction Company, the local Dhabi Contracting, and Saudi Oger’s local subsidiary, Oger Abu Dhabi.

The project covers the construction of a five-star hotel with 189 rooms and 139 serviced apartments, a retail area, basement parking and facilities including  a swimming pool, health club and spa. The total built-up area is about 100,000 square metres (MEED 1:10:09).

The construction contractors submitted technical proposals for the development on 1 October.

The architect is San Francisco-based Handel Architects and the local Serex International. The structural engineer is Seattle-based Magnusson Klemencic Associates. The mechanical, electrical and plumbing consultant is UK-based WSP. EC Harris, also of the UK, is the quantity surveyor.

Sowwah Island is located between Reem Island and the port area of Abu Dhabi Island.

Developers are planning several other major projects for the island. Mubadala is also tendering a contract to build the estimated AED5bn ($1.4bn) Cleveland Clinic. Once Mubadala has evaluated the technical proposals it received in September, it will invite the three best-ranked bidders to submit commercial offers.
