Mubadala Development Company, the Abu Dhabi government-owned investment fund, has shortlisted three groups for the estimated AED5bn ($1.4bn) contract to build the Cleveland Clinic.

According to sources involved in the bidding process, the shortlisted companies are the local/Australian Al-Habtoor Leighton Group; the local Arabtec Construction with Greece’s Aktor; and the local/Belgian Six Construct Abu Dhabi with South Korea’s Samsung Corporation.

Mubadala received commercial bids from five groups in early January. The other bidders were the local/UK Dutco Balfour Beatty with Athens-based Consolidated Contractors Company; and Saudi Oger subsidiary Oger Abu Dhabi with South Africa’s Murray & Roberts Contractors (Middle East).

The Cleveland Clinic will be built on Sowwah Island, between Reem Island and the Mina Zayed area of Abu Dhabi Island. It will be a 360-bed, 220,000-square-metre hospital with parking spaces for 3,200 cars.

US-based Aecom is the engineer on the project and local developer Aldar Properties is managing the construction on behalf of Mubadala.

Mubadala is also tendering another major hospital project in the emirate, in Al-Ain in Abu Dhabi’s Eastern region. It received bids from construction firms on 4 January for the contract to design and build the Tawam Hospital.

The bidders for that contract include the local/UK Al-Futtaim Carillion with the local Al-Fara’a General Contracting Company; the local/Australian Al-Habtoor Leighton Group with South Africa’s Murray & Roberts Contractors (Middle East); a joint venture of the local/Lebanese Arabian Construction Company (ACC) with France’s Bouygues; a joint venture of the local Drake & Scull International with Spain’s OHL; and Australia’s Multiplex (MEED 15:1:10).
