New prices in for College of Technology tender

25 April 2003
Revised commercial bids were opened on 21 April for the main works package on the College of Technology project in Doha. As in the original bidding, United Engineers (Malaysia) Berhadis the low bidder for the contract, although the gap between its price and the next lowest - from Cyprus' Joannou & Paraskevaides (J&P)- has narrowed substantially from QR 17 million ($4.7 million) to just QR 2 million ($550,000). Six companies participated in the repricing exercise, which was launched by the client after the original bids came in above budget for the estimated $90 million contract (MEED 4:4:03).

A contract award is expected in May, while the construction period has been set at 480 days. The main works package calls for the construction of engineering, administration and business management buildings, an information/IT auditorium and a cafeteria. The total floor area of the buildings is 63,000 square metres. The successful bidder will also install utilities, a central plant and parking facilities, as well as carry out landscaping works. A third package, covering furniture, fixtures and equipment, is due to be tendered at a later date.

The college is being established by the government, the Canadian Bureau of International Education and the College of the North Atlantic. The programme and construction manager is the local office of KEO International Consultants(MEED 24:1:03).
