New uranium find in Iran

25 September 2003
Inspectors from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) have found traces of weapons-grade uranium at the Kalaye Electric Company on the southern outskirts of Tehran. Officials from the agency have not confirmed whether the uranium was produced in Iran or came from contamination by imported equipment. IAEA officials have been in Iran searching for possible evidence of enriched uranium and a possible nuclear-weapons programme.

Iran has found itself the target of criticism from the international community for its nuclear programme. Tehran on 23 September said it would return to a policy of minimum commitment with the IAEA after it was given a 31-October deadline to disclose all nuclear activities. Tehran claims that its programme is for peaceful purposes. If the country is found to be in breach of the nuclear non-proliferation treaty it could face international sanctions (MEED 23:9:03).
