The Ministry of Electricity & Water (MEW) is evaluating six consultancy bids for phase two of the Riffa power station rehabilitation and upgrade programme. The bidders are Lahmeyer International and Fichtner, both of Germany, the UK's Mott MacDonald, Ireland's ESB International, the US'Kuljian Engineering Corporation and Switzerland's Electrowatt Engineering Services. An award is expected before the end of the year.
Phase two covers extending the life and lowering the nitrous oxide emissions of six gas turbine units, installed in the early 1980s with a site rating of 75 MW. Kuljian is acting as consultant for the phase one rehabilitation, which covers five 50-MW gas turbines.Tender documents are currently being drawn up and MEW is preparing to start prequalification (Bahrain, MEED Special Report, 17:12:99).
