Newspapers closed ahead of polls

19 February 2004
Reports say that Iran's judiciary has closed down two reformist newspapers ahead of the 20 February parliamentary elections. The newspapers, Shargh and Yas-e No, were reportedly shut down after they published long extracts of a letter written by MPs which criticised the supreme leader, Ayatollah Khamenei.

The letter apparently questioned Khamenei on his handling of the debate over the disqualifications of more than 2,500 mainly reformist candidates from the polls. The Supreme Council of National Security had barred the press from publishing the letter.
