The town, on the eastern tip of the country, is a popular tourist destination and the new airport is intended to help visitors avoid a long road journey from the capital.

It is one of six airports being developed by the government. Others are planned at Sohar, Duqm, Adam, Haima and Shaleem (MEED 25:02:08).
