Description: The Upper Zakum project is an engineering, procurement and construction contract awarded to National Marine Dredging Company, which includes the creation of four new artificial islands, complete with port facilities. This project is part of Zadcos plan for developing the petroleum operations at the Zakum field, with the objective of increasing production by 40 per cent to 750,000 barrels a day. The artificial islands are falcon-shaped and located 80 kilometres off the coast of Abu Dhabi. The project involved creating the reclaimed islands, protecting the land mass with breakwaters and building sheltered harbours.
