Sohar petrochemicals complex split into four construction packages
Oman has asked companies to prequalify to bid on the construction of the estimated $3.6bn Liwa Plastics petrochemicals complex in the northern port of Sohar.
Project owner Oman Refineries and Petroleum Industries Company (orpic) set a deadline of 14 October for companies to submit prequalification documents on four engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) packages.
The four packages are:
- Steam cracker with offsite works and utilities
- Polyethylene and polypropylene units with offsite works and utilities
- NGL extraction unit with offsite works and Utilities
- Natural gas liquids (NGL) pipeline
The prequalification process has been split into two phases with documents for the second phase submitted to successful applicants.
After the first stage, the applicants will be given the opportunity to form joint ventures or consortiums with other prequalified companies before applying for the second phase.
In July, Orpic awarded five technology licensing deals worth a combined $80m for the Liwa Plastics project to US-based groups CB&I, LyondellBasell and Univation Technologies and Frances Axens.
Earlier this year, CB&I was selected as the technology licensor for the steam cracker, while the project management consultancy contract for the scheme was awarded Engineers India.
The project has a total planned capacity of 1 million tonnes a year (t/y) of plastics and, after its completion, Orpic will have the capacity to produce 1.4 million t/y of polyethylene and polypropylene.
Orpic has commissioned Oman Gas Company (OGC) to build a NGLs plant at the Fahud field in northern Oman, which will extract products to be used as feedstock at the Liwa Plastics cracker. UK-based Mott MacDonald has been awarded the contract to carry out a feed study on the plant.
