Oman tenders road upgrade contract

An estimated $4.3bn-worth of road projects are under way in Oman

Oman’s Transport & Communications Ministry (MOTC) has invited firms to bid by 31 December for the contract to upgrade 27 kilometres of an existing road linking the capital Muscat with Al-Dakhiliya Governorate.

The project comprises adding third and fourth lanes to the dual Rusayl-Nizwa Road that starts on the Muscat Expressway interchange and extends to the intersection at Bidbid-sur Road.

The scope entails the construction of roads, bridges and tunnels as well as electricity, gas and water supply, drainage works and street lighting, among others.

An estimated $4.3bn-worth of road projects are under way in Oman, according to MEED Projects data.

A further $4.2bn-worth of road schemes are under procurement and planned.

MOTC has been evaluating bids for package 7 of the Batinah Expressway scheme.

The bidders and prices are:

  • Ghantoot Transport & General Contracting (UAE): $205m
  • Strabag Oman (Austria / Oman): $256m
  • Galfar Engineering & Contracting (local): $306m

The Batinah Expressway project involves the construction of 265km of new road. The scheme is expected to improve the northern road link into Muscat from the UAE, providing an alternative to the existing congested Batinah Highway.
