Sohar Aluminium and India’s Synergies Castings expect to begin construction of a $100m alloy wheel manufacturing plant in Sohar Industrial Estate in the coming months.
The plant, envisaged to produce approximately 2.5 million wheels annually, is expected to be completed by 2020. It will create an estimated 500 direct jobs once operational.
The plant will help grow downstream aluminium industries in the sultanate, according to Said al-Masoudi, Sohar Aluminium CEO. It will also help meet Sohar Aluminium’s goal of supplying 60 per cent of its hot metal production to downstream partners.
“We are offering them proximity to raw materials, a significant value proposition that provides our downstream customers with a distinct energy cost advantage,” Al-Masoudi said.
At full capacity, Sohar Aluminium will supply more than 24,000 tonnes of aluminium annually, which will be used to produce “high-end” aluminium alloy wheels for automobiles.
MEED understands Synergies Castings will supply the wheels directly to automobile manufacturers around the world.
