Omantel signs four upgrade agreements

Omantel on 27 October signed four agreements totalling RO 19.7 million ($47.9 million) for upgrading its services in the country. Omantel chairman and Telecommunications Minister Malik bin Sulaiman al-Mamari said the upgrades are part of the company's efforts to improve the telecom infrastructure. The four agreements are:

An agreement signed with Motorola valued at RO 11 million ($28.2 million) for the expansion of the GSM network in various regions, which will include the installation of 100 GSM substations.

An agreement with Ericsson valued at RO 4.5 million ($11.3 million) to upgrade existing digital exchanges in Oman.

An agreement, signed with Al Zubair Telecom at a total cost of RO 2.3 million ($5.9 million), calls for the supply, installation and commissioning of a Synchronised Digital Hierarchy (SDH) transmission system network as well as network management system.

An agreement signed with the Logica company valued at RO 1.9 million ($4.9 million) for the enhancement and expansion of Short Message Service (SMS) in Oman.
