Local developer Nakheel has signed a memorandum of understanding with Japan's Osaka Monorail Company to provide technical support for the operation and maintenance of the Palm Jumeirah monorail.

The 5.4-kilometre-long transit system will run between the Gateway station at the base of the trunk of the Palm and the Atlantis station on the crescent, with two intermediate stations at Trump International Hotel & Tower and the Village Centre.

It is expected to take three years to complete. A Japanese consortium of Hitachi Corporation, Marubeni Corporation, Mitsui & Company and Obayashi Corporation is carrying out the estimated AED 900 million ($245 million) construction contract (MEED 11:08:06).

The deal between Nakheel and Osaka Monorail was signed in Japan. It is the first monorail project to be built in the region and is designed to initially carry up to 2,400 passengers an hour in both directions. Capacity is due to rise to 6,000 passengers.
