PAKISTAN: KPT moves ahead with long-awaited terminal

Karachi Port Trust (KPT) has invited companies to apply for prequalification for the project to establish a new container terminal at Karachi. The project is to be implemented on a build-operate-transfer (BOT) basis under a 20-year concession agreement. KPT had previously said that it would award the concession by the end of 1997.

Construction work on berths six-nine, where the new terminal will be located, is being undertaken by Turkey's Sezai Turkes-Feyzi Akkaya. The company is carrying out reconstruction work on about 600 metres of quay wall under a $44.6 million contract.

The selected bidder for the BOT concession will supply and install gantry cranes and other equipment, and build a road and bridge for terminal traffic. The company will then operate the terminal, paying leasing fees, land rent and a royalty to KPT. The level of the royalty is to be included in bids for the concession. The operator will collect fees from users of the terminal. The deadline for applications for prequalification is 20 February. Documents have been prepared by the UK's Scott Wilson Kirkpatrick (MEED 14:11:97).

KPT has also invited bids for consultancy work on its second modernisation project. The wide-ranging project includes commercialisation, training, pollution control measures, plans for an off-dock container freight station, construction of a hazardous cargo terminal, dredging and reconstruction work. The deadline for bidding for consultancy work is 16 March.
