Palestinian economy recovers in second quarter

Unemployment decreases to 22 per cent

The Palestinian territories’ gross domestic product (GDP) was $1.25bn at the end of June, a 5.5 per cent increase over the last year.

Preliminary figures released by the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics (PCBS) show the economy of the West Bank and Gaza grew from $1.19bn recorded in the second quarter of 2008.

GDP was also up 6.4 per cent from $1.18bn in the first quarter of 2009.

GDP per capita in the Occupied Territories was $339.4 between April and the end of June, up by 2.4 per cent year-on-year.

Unemployment was 22 per cent at the end of June, down 12.6 percentage points from the first quarter and down 14 percentage points from the end of the second quarter of 2008.
