Petrofac bids low for desalter contract

A close contest is in store for the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract to install a new desalter unit at gathering centre (GC) 27.

Sharjah-based Petrofac Internationalhas submitted a low bid of KD 7.39 million ($24.5 million) about 1 per cent cheaper than the next price of KD 7.44 million ($24.7 million) offered by SK Engineering & Construction of South Korea. A total of 37 companies were prequalified, but only two submitted a bid.

The two-year contract will cover the installation of a 40,000-barrel-a-day (b/d) desalination unit, modifications to the light crude train and related mechanical, electrical and civil works.

The US' Parsons Engineering Corporationis the project management consultant. GC 27, located at Umm Gudair oil field in the west of the country, was commissioned in January 2001 with a nameplate capacity of 190,000 b/d. The client is Kuwait Oil Company (MEED 16:5:03).
