Plans gather pace for carbon anode project

The local Al-Fada Trading & Contracting Companyhas been granted a 25-year concession by the Public Authority for Industry to construct a carbon anode plant at the west Shuaiba industrial area. Estimated to cost KD 120 million ($398 million), the project will be constructed on a build-own-operate (BOO) basis.

Al-Fada is expected to formally set up a new project company in partnership with two US firms and a similar number of GCC investors. The new firm will be called Gulf Carbon Industries Company (GCIC).

The local Kuwait Consulting & Investment Company has carried out a feasibility study for the proposed project. A team of the Canada's Alcoa with Dubai Aluminium (Dubal) is the technology provider.

The next stage in the project implementation will be a formal contract award by January to K Home of the UK to carry out the front-end engineering and design (FEED) package. The plant is due to be commissioned by mid-2006 with nameplate capacity of 600,000 tonnes a year.
