Dubai is to move most of Port Rashid's cargo handling operations to Jebel Ali within months, marking the end of major commercial operations at Port Rashid.
Most container cargo, along with all general and non-containerised cargo, will move, with staff and equipment for these operations leaving for Jebel Ali by March.
Port Rashid was Dubai’s main maritime gateway until it was superceded by its larger neighbour to the south in the 1980s.
It will retain some container capacity after March, but its main focus will shift to cruise ships. A second cruise terminal will be built at the site in the coming years.
Close by, Dubai Maritime City, will become a maritime services, shipbuilding and cruise hub, incorporating Dubai Drydocks.
DP World operates Port Rashid and Jebel Ali.
