German prefabrication company Praton International has joined forces with United Eastern Group (UEG) of Abu Dhabi to form Algeria's first prefabricated building company, Praton Construction Algeria (Pratco). State housing and savings bank Caisse Nationale de l'Epargne et de Preyvoyance (CNEP)is also taking a stake in the new venture which will have a paid-in capital of $10 million.

'The new company will open a factory in Algiers in eight months time to produce precast housing materials for the local market,' a UEG official told MEED on 17 January. The plant will produce units with a total floor space of 20,000 square metres a year. The technology can be applied to precasts for houses, offices and commercial centres of up to 20 storeys. Pratco plans to open five factories across Algeria in the next 10 years.

Praton International has planned, delivered, installed and commissioned a number of factories in the Middle East including a circular plant in Yanbu, Saudi Arabia, producing prefab elements for projects in the industrial city and private villas and a circular plant in Tehran, which provides materials for various customers including a car factory and public construction authorities. A new mobile precast factory is being built in Sohar, Oman.
