Prequals in for condensate refinery

International contractors submitted prequalifications in late March for the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) package on the planned Ras Laffan condensate refinery project. About 10 EPC contractors were invited to prequalify for the package, which calls for the construction of a 146,000-barrel-a-day refinery at a cost of about $400 million (MEED 29:11:02).

The EPC package is expected to be issued for bid in July, with an award scheduled for the first quarter of 2005. Paris-based Technipis the front-end engineering and design (FEED) contractor. France's Totalis in charge of implementing the project, while Qatar Liquefied Gas Company (Qatargas)will operate the facility once it comes on stream in 2007. Under an agreement signed in November 2002, Qatar Petroleum (QP)will hold an 80 per cent stake in the joint venture company to design, construct and own the facility, while the remaining 20 per cent will be split equally between Total and the US' ExxonMobil Corporation.

The refinery will produce liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), naphtha, kerosine and diesel oil.
