Prequals in for KAIA desal plant

At least 20 local and international companies submitted prequalification applications by 22 April for the contract to develop a 30,000 cubic-metre-a-day desalination plant to supply potable water to the King Abdulaziz International Airport (KAIA) at Jeddah. A tender for the build-operate-transfer (BOT) concession is expected to be issued by the end of the third quarter (MEED 17:3:06).

Applicants include Al-Kawther Industries Company, Raka Holding Company, Saudi Oger, El-Seif Engineering Contracting Establishment, Saudi Binladin Group (SBG), Al-Fanar Trading, Sawaco, all local, and the US' General Electric.

International Finance Corporation (IFC), the private sector arm of the World Bank, is the lead adviser to the General Authority for Civil Aviation. The UK office of Japan's Nippon Koei and France's Gide Loyrette Nouel have been brought on board by the IFC to assist on the scheme's technical and environmental aspects, and the legal aspects respectively.
