Prequals invited for Hamad Medical City complex

04 July 2003
Prequalification has been launched by the Ministry of Municipal Affairs & Agriculture for the estimated $450 million Hamad Medical City project. The ministry has issued two prequalification invitations: the first covers the construction of hospital buildings; the second is for general buildings. For both packages, interested international contractors and local grade-A contractors have been given until 16 July to respond. The Hamad Medical City will initially be used as the athletes' village for the 2006 Asian games, after which it will be retrofitted (MEED 3:1:03).

The first prequalification invitation is for contractors specialising in hospital construction. The scope of the package covers building works for new facilities, offering 1,000 beds, for paediatric, orthopaedic, dialysis and trauma treatment, as well as a nursing home and a day surgery centre.

The second prequalification is for the construction of residential and office buildings, mosques, clubs and parking lots. Unlike the medical facilities, the general building works will be tendered in several packages.

The project, which will also include the construction of roads and a new underpass, is to be built on a 36.5-hectare site beside the Hamad Medical Centre on Ahmad bin Ali street. The total built-up area of the buildings is over 400,000 square metres, while there will be parking space for over 3,000 cars.

The US' Hill Internationalis the project manager; the consultant is Fedconof Thailand.
